Dating & Academic Performance
Advertisement Every day, millions of single adults, worldwide, visit an online dating site. Many are lucky, finding life-long love or at least some exciting escapades. Others are not so lucky. The industry—eHarmony, Match, OkCupid, and a thousand other online dating sites—wants singles and the general public to believe that seeking a partner through their site is not just an alternative way to traditional venues for finding a partner, but a superior way. With our colleagues Paul Eastwick, Benjamin Karney, and Harry Reis, we recently published a book-length article in the journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest that examines this question and evaluates online dating from a scientific perspective. We also conclude, however, that online dating is not better than conventional offline dating in most respects, and that it is worse is some respects.

Participants were asked questions including: How much money would you be willing to spend on your date? Through five psychological experiments, Andrew Elliot, professor of psychology, and Daniela Niesta, post-doctoral researcher, demonstrate that the color red makes men feel more amorous toward women. And men are unaware of the role the color plays in their attraction.

Share on Facebook These days, cell phones are as common a sight as the local supermarket or gas station. Social Effects of Cell Phone Use Katz notes that a large percentage of students use cell phones in class, and some dating websites have taken to warning daters away from cell use during meetups. Cell phones have also become a way for women to ward off unwanted attention from men on streets. In many instances, phones have become a way to close out others, and help to form an invisible wall that isolates.
Cell Phone Use and Language Cell phones have materially affected language use. These days, it’s a common sight to see people write “LOL” or “srsly” instead of expressing themselves through fully realized action and language. Text speak is now acceptable in school testing in New Zealand and Great Britain, even though school administrators feel that it’s harming correct English usage. Language has become compacted even further by cell phone linkages to social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.
Because of character count restrictions on these sites, messages are restricted to characters. These shortened thoughts often necessitate abbreviation of words that could become habitual, given enough time and use, with the potential to spill into normal conversation. However, studies show that the shortened speech may help children with reading comprehension, and that there are no negative effects from texting.
Cell Phones and Health The biggest health risk one could take with a cell phone is to use one while driving.
New Dating Study: How Your Work Life Affects Your Sex Life
By Latoya Newman Dating partners can support each other by doing school work together. Anything that takes up your time, attention and energy can affect how well you do in school. The impact of your dating life on academic performance will depend on how well you are able to find a balance between your social life and your studies. In moderation, dating can help your academic life.
Happy Relationships, Better Performance As with any other aspect of your social life, the more comfortable you feel in your dating relationship, the better you are likely to perform in school. If you experience the death of a loved one, have a fight with your best friend or a date that is too demanding, your studies may decline.
The study, which surveyed nearly 5, married people over the age of 50, found that relationships are happier when both people involved have the same drinking habits.
Now a new study suggests that pornography may actually physically divide people too, namely those who are married. And women who start watching porn are three times as likely to split, according to a working paper presented at the American Sociological Association on Aug. However, porn appears to have a less negative impact on marriage if couples watch it together. The paper also finds that stopping porn-watching lowers the likelihood of divorce for women, though not for men.
The authors used longitudinal data from the General Social Survey, which tracks, among other things, marital happiness, porn-consumption and marital status. It analyzed results from more than participants over three time periods, focusing in on participants whose porn-watching habits altered during that period.
That is, the individuals did not watch pornography when first interviewed but had taken it up by the time of their second interview, or they did watch during their first interview but had given it up by the second. Conversely, female porn watchers who gave up the genre were only about as third as likely to be divorced as those who kept up the habit. Could it be that people started watching porn because their marriages were already unhappy?

This finding is surprising compared to past research, which has shown that women’s self-perceptions are most affected by visual media including magazines, television and social networking sites. Jessica Strubel , assistant professor in UNT’s Department of Merchandising and Digital Retailing , and Trent Petrie , professor in the Department of Psychology , surveyed 1, female and male undergraduates to examine Tinder’s effect on psychosocial well-being.
Their results were presented at the American Psychological Association’s annual convention Aug. As anticipated in the study, the researchers discovered a correlation between app use and self-worth indicators — such as body satisfaction, self-esteem, feelings of body shame, internalization of cultural beauty standards, comparisons to others and self-objectification — for both genders.
However, one finding was surprising. Regardless of gender, Tinder users reported less psychosocial well-being and more indicators of body dissatisfaction than non-users.

When something isn’t working the way it should be, understanding the science behind what is supposed to be happening is key to pinpointing the problem. The blood vessels leading to the reproductive system then relax and this allows increased circulation in the genital area. When you aren’t aroused, the blood vessels in your penis are only partially open. But when your brain sends messages to your penis that you are ready for sex, the vessels open and allow more blood to enter the area.
Because of the increased blood flow, blood gets trapped in the penis, which makes the penis expand and causes an erection. Your blood vessels begin to close up and the blood flow in your penis decreases. Michael Reitano, physician in residence at Roman explains, this can be the impetus for weaker erections.

Incidence[ edit ] After the Kinsey Reports came out in the early s, findings suggested that historically and cross-culturally, extramarital sex has been a matter of regulation more than sex before marriage. For example, one study conducted by the University of Washington, Seattle found slightly, or significantly higher rates of infidelity for populations under 35, or older than Rates of infidelity among women are thought to increase with age. In one study by Blow, rates were higher in more recent marriages, compared with previous generations.
According to this theory, when people live within environments that are demanding and stressful, the need for bi-parental care is greater for increasing the survival of offspring. Correspondingly, monogamy and commitment are more commonplace. On the other hand, when people live within environments that encompass little stress and threats to the viability of offspring, the need for serious and committed relations is lowered and therefore promiscuity and infidelity are more common.
According to this theory, an area has a high sex ratio when there is a higher number of marriage-aged women to marriage-aged men and an area has a low sex ratio when there is more marriage-aged men to marriage-aged women. On the other hand, when sex ratios are low, promiscuity is less common because women are in demand and since they desire monogamy and commitment, in order for men to remain competitive in the pool of mates, they must respond to these desires.
Support for this theory comes from evidence showing higher divorce rates in countries with lower sex ratios and higher monogamy rates in countries with higher sex ratios. It is more common for men compared to women to engage in extradyadic relationships. In addition, recent research finds that differences in gender may possibly be explained by other mechanisms including power and sensations seeking.
For example, one study found that some women in more financially independent and higher positions of power, were also more likely to be more unfaithful to their partners.

Busby and his colleagues published their work Dec. The intricate nature of sex Past research on sex and its link to relationship quality has revealed two different paradigms. In one, sex is considered essential to a developing relationship since it allows partners to assess their sexual compatibility.
Following this line of thinking, couples who marry before testing out their sexual chemistry are at risk of marital distress and failure later on.

Boy – girl relationships don’t affect studies do they? I assume that your parents object to you dating while you are in school. Unfortunately, they are making a valid point. Back in the days when Israel called up its volunteer army, certain people were asked not to serve: Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man dedicate it. Also what man is there who has planted a vineyard and has not eaten of it?
